COUPLES PHOTOGRAPHY

...and 4 tips for your next session at Lake Louise

Hi there! My name's Naty, and I'm a photographer licensed in Banff National Park.

If you ever visit Lake Louise, take one look around and you'll see every family, couple, or individual with their phones out, trying to simultaneously capture: 1) evidence that they were here, and 2) the majesty of Lake Louise.

Unfortunately, these types of photographs tend to get relegated to the Photos app on your iPhone and typically wind up in the archives of your Facebook or Instagram feed.

For people looking to capture their story at Lake Louise in a meaningful and beautiful way, I highly recommend hiring a professional photographer (even if it isn't me!)

Whether it is a family sessionengagement sessionmaternity session, couples sessions, or bridal session, I love being a part of these moments in my client's lives at this breathtaking locale. I truly believe I must have the best job in the world being able to capture a small part of people's stories in one of the most beautiful places in the world - Lake Louise.

Lake Louise, in my opinion, is one of the most scenic places in the world, so it's not a surprise that thousands of people (an estimated 15,000 per day during summer months), come to capture the beauty of this amazing place. Although Lake Louise is one of my top places to take peoples' portraits, this popular place comes with its own challenges.

Here are my 4 tips to help you navigate the challenges when doing a session or having a session done at Lake Louise:

  1. LIGHTING: The same is true here as pretty much anywhere else- sunrise and sunset are the BEST times to come for the most beautiful subtle and even lighting.

  2. CROWDS: Lake Louise can be EXTREMELY busy, especially during the busiest months (July and August). This is another reason to come during sunrise or sunset, as the crowds are not as bad, especially for clients who are not very comfortable with other people looking at them while having photos taken. If you're photographing someone else, be sure to check with your clients that they are okay with dealing with the crowds before doing their session there.

  3. PARKING: Parking is very limited and almost aways full midday. This is another great reason for doing your session during sunrise or sunset. If a sunrise or sunset session is not an option, make sure you book a shuttle for yourself and your clients to ensure you can access the lake.

  4. TEMPERATURE: If you're heading to Lake Louise during the winter months, be prepared that the temperature at the lake is typically much colder than the temperature in Banff or Canmore. Make sure you're dressed accordingly so you are comfortable during your session.
